Disconnected was created as part of Brock Loeven’s final thesis project for which he explored still life photography and how objects represent identity. Inspired by the Japanese art form, Kintsugi, which reconnects fractured pottery using gold-dusted lacquer as a way to highlight and embrace the object’s history. Brock uses a similar technique to represent a falling out with a best friend, a break-up with a romantic partner, or an altercation with a relative. He feels that relationships fracture too and cannot easily be reassembled to serve their original functions.
