Diana Gordon-Colchin is a Guatemalan-Canadian portrait and fashion photographer, currently based in Brampton. She likes to experiment with colour and creates bold images with her techniques. This ongoing series, titled “Soy Inmigrante Latino (I am a Latin Immigrant)” is about the alienation of Latin American immigrants due to generalized stereotypes. It features portraits of immigrants, which are paired with notes handwritten by each subject; these notes describe the subject’s thoughts about being stereotyped. While the notes show the negative side of the Latin American immigrant experience, the coloured backgrounds show the positive side of it, expressing a general ambiguity overall. This project explores the lack of knowledge about Latin America and how it continues to affect immigrants from the region.
