Elijah Monroe

As a First Nations artist, Elijah investigates the malleability of identity through the myriad of characters that this encapsulates. The artist has colonized these constructed identities and transformed himself with reference to the status of self and culture. The series of images are not representations of the artist’s identity but rather they are about the projection of personas that are deep within our contemporary cultural imagination. The artist assumes multiple roles as the photographer, model, psychiatrist, stylist, makeup artist, Photoshop maven, and hairstylist. Through these assumed roles, Monroe is performing a private play between himself and the camera which describes the multiplicity of identity these characters reveal.
