Jenisha Hibbert Thomas is an editorial portrait and fashion photographer based in the GTA who aims to tell conceptual stories with her images using diverse subjects. In this series — The Duality of Mommy & Me — she explores the complexities of Black hair culture, and the differences between her mother’s and her own hairstyles in particular. This work addresses the dualities between Westernized hair practices and natural hair structures with reference to historical Black family portraiture.
