In the book Little Prince, the narrator tells a story about a time when he was a young boy and he drew a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant in its stomach. Surprisingly, every adult who saw this picture mistakenly interpreted it as a drawing of a hat.
This story inspired me to think about the element of perception. Most people judge others initially on their appearance instead of their inner personality. This work (the photograph and its afterimage) challenges us to consider more closely what we perceive.
Is it an elephant and a snake or is it just a green hat?
