Spencer Schmalz is a documentary photojournalist from Hamilton, Ontario who focuses on capturing the raw beauty of forgotten, and often ignored, corners of society. His roots in street and graffiti culture have had a heavy hand in developing his style and his areas of photographic focus, often leading him to work in the abandoned places of our modern society.
Over the past five months Spencer has been working on a documentary story which tells the story of two cities, Hamilton, Ontario and Flint, Michigan. In his photobook “SISTERS,” Spencer looks at the history of the powerful and promising industries that once dominated both Hamilton and Flint. Through a street documentary style of shooting, Spencer has captured the economic decline of these once-booming cities, alongside their slow push for revitalization and rebirth.
