After a lifetime of working behind a bar, I have turned my habit of observation towards photography. With a fondness for collecting and nostalgia, these interests influence my still life, found object, and documentary work. Growing up in Toronto and now based in Hamilton, I have spent my life fascinated by third spaces; spaces that form organically to serve the community. Due to gentrification and development, many of these places are being lost, and bulldozed in the name of progress, emptying communities of their history, and of the stories and moments that built them. Through my thesis work, I have explored many of the spaces that have been impacted in Hamilton, specifically bars and restaurants: capturing the people, places, and moments that made them so important, trying to preserve their memory long after the bulldozers are gone.
