Yujie Wang

Yujie Wang is a Toronto-based fashion and still life photographer. Her work gives the effect of a gentle dream through her ethereal and poetic stylistic approach. Yujie’s cultural experiences inspire her work; traditional Chinese aesthetics are incorporated in subtle and non-cliché ways. She is currently working on an ongoing project inspired by Piying (Chinese shadow puppetry), a traditional form of storytelling that uses colourful silhouette figures made from leather or paper. In this series, she tries to find a balance between commercial and fine art, as well as modern fashion and traditional culture. By placing a screen in front of her subjects and using unusual lighting strategies, she replicates the visual effect of Chinese shadow puppetry.
